The Slow Life is a series of oil and pastel paintings inspired by the slow food movement. Cassandra has always been inspired by the local, seasonal foods grown in her region. The Slow Life expresses the gratitude felt for those who grow, harvest and cook these foods. She celebrates them by depicting local whole foods and flowers in a simple, impressionistic, still life style.
After 15 years of living life in the fast commuter/professional world of the Bay Area, Cassandra had pushed herself to the limits and burned out. She had grown up in Santa Cruz, and remembered how it felt living in a coastal life environment where a slower pace of life was valued. Modern society in the Silicon Valley seemed to move at lightening speed compared to the coast. She had drifted away from the values of slow that brought her balance and integration. After her "crash and burn”, she returned to the basics of Slow Life in order to rebuild herself- literally from the inside out. She became more conscious about the effects that food had on her body and brain type, the gut/brain connection and it’s relationship to being ADHD, autistic and moving too fast. The Slow Life paintings are her positive revolt against our modern addiction to the “slick, fast and cheap” life that is compromising our health and safety.
